Allan Saint-Maximin pays tribute to his Newcastle team-mates after winning goal against Oxford

Allan Saint-Maximin has paid tribute to his team-mates after Newcastle United’s FA Cup win over Oxford - despite dragging the Magpies into the last 16.

It was the Frenchman’s dramatic winner in the last throes of stoppage time that sealed victory for United and booked a place in round five for the first time since 2006.

It was Christian Atsu’s through ball that paved the way for Saint-Maximin to snatch Newcastle’s win at the death.

Saint-Maximin said: “I’m really happy to score this important goal.

“I have to say thanks to my partners because they gave me a great ball to score.

“I know it’s an important game, and we have to keep going and do everything for the fans and win the next game.”

Saint-Maximin sprinted to the 1,800 Geordie fans after slamming the ball home and silencing the home fans.

It had looked like the game was heading for penalties but Saint-Maximin intervened.

He reflected: “The fans give me everything. I have to give back.

“That’s why, when I scored, I go directly to the fans. I know it’s important for the fans to win this game.”
