Allan Saint-Maximin leads rallying call after Newcastle United's capital surrender

Allan Saint-Maximin has called for an improvement ahead of Newcastle United's next Premier League encounter at Crystal Palace.

The Eagles have not won a top-flight game since Boxing Day and despite being fifth at one stage this season, they are still not certain of their Premier League place for next season.

United players capitulated at the Emirates Stadium and now need to find a response at Selhurst Park.

Saint-Maximin said: "We were really disappointed as we done everything to win this game (at Arsenal).

"We played really good in the first half.

"We spoke in the dressing room about not conceding in the first 10 minutes.

"But Aubamayeng scored and after that, it's difficult when you try to do everything and they score.

"We have to keep going and keep working for the next game.

"Everybody is really disappointed, we played well in the first half but lost 4-0, and that's too much."

Saint-Maximin actually came closest to hauling his side back into the game at Arsenal but his effort struck the post.

Saint-Maximin added: "Sometimes in this game you need more luck but we had none.

"When you have chances and you don't score then they get an opportunity and score directly afterwards, it's difficult.

"Sometimes it's like this."

But Newcastle now face a test of their character at Palace with the French winger one of the few players to face the music after the defeat at Arsenal.

The Frenchman, speaking to NUFC TV, said: "We'll try to do everything (to win).

"We tried that at Arsenal.

"In the second half they played better football and even when we had the ball, even me sometimes, we gave it back to Arsenal.

"It's difficult and you have to keep the ball if you want to play.

"You have to let them run too, but in this game we did not play well."
