Allan Saint-Maximin explains why Joelinton needs time and why Newcastle United will 'stay' with him

Allan Saint-Maximin has vowed to 'do my best' for Joelinton because he 'loves' his strike partner and hopes Newcastle United's record signing can follow in Miguel Almiron's footsteps by scoring more often after ending a lengthy drought.

The Magpies' No 9 has scored just three goals in all competitions since completing his £40m move from Hoffenheim last summer and has not found the back of the net in the Premier League since August.

As well as adapting to a new league and culture, Joelinton has also had to adjust to a new position on his own up front, where he has played the majority of his football for Newcastle.

The Brazilian certainly has the backing of his team-mates and Saint-Maximin pointed to the example of Almiron, who bagged his first goal for Newcastle in December before going on to score six goals in the space of 10 weeks, to explain how one goal can spark a purple patch when a player has settled in at his new club.

"I think for Joelinton and even for me and for Miggy Almiron, too, it's difficult because we're not from England," he told beIN SPORTS.

"I did everything in France, Joelinton played a lot in Germany and Miggy played in the States. That's why it's a little bit difficult.

"Everyone needs maybe one year of an adaptation. That's why Miggy took time to score but after the first goal, he felt better and he started to score again and again.

"I hope it will be the same for Joelinton because sometimes I know when you're a striker and you come for a lot of money, everyone wants you to score but sometimes it's not easy because you can get one action in a game or two and you have to score.

"If you don't score, you have a lot of people judge you and this can sometimes kill your confidence.

"That's why we want to stay with Joelinton and I try to do my best for him and Miggy's the same because we are together. We train every day together.

"I love my partners and I hope they love me too and we want to do the best for everyone to score."
