NEWCASTLE councillor Allan Robinson's company has been fined $8000 after illegally dumping 52 tonnes of demolition waste from a former Maitland club.
Warabrook-based ARSK Civil Pty Ltd was engaged last year to demolish the Maitland Leagues Club in Bulwer Street. The company was accused of dumping tonnes of the waste on a property at Turners Road in Woodberry.
It had been intended for use as construction fill, a prohibited use of demolition waste. Mr Robinson, an ARSK director, entered a guilty plea on behalf of the company in Maitland Local Court.
Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad co-ordinator Rob Robertson said the matter highlighted the rules around demolition waste.
"The concept of "clean, hard fill" does not exist in reality and this material cannot be applied to land if it does not meet the exemptions and orders set out by the NSW EPA," Mr Robertson said.
The RID Squad is a joint program between the NSW Environment Protection Authority and local councils.
The squad workers across seven council areas in the Hunter and Central Coast.
