Allan McGregor's dazzling Rangers form prompts Scotland recall thinking as Steve Clarke urged to pose the question

Ally McCoist reckons Steve Clarke should ask Allan McGregor if he fancies a Scotland return for the Euro 2020 finals.

The Rangers keeper has had a dazzling campaign for his club and is a Player of the Year candidate after helping Steven Gerrard’s men to the Premiership title as the Ibrox club ended a ten-year wait to be champions of Scotland again.

McGregor, though, has been unavailable for his country.

The 39-year-old retired from the Scotland scene in March 2019 during the stewardship of Alex McLeish.

Current international gaffer Clarke has a strong unit in the goalkeeping department with Euros play-off hero David Marshall and the experienced Craig Gordon in the ranks at the moment.

But Rangers and Scotland hero McCoist doesn’t think it’d do any harm for the national coach to double-check with McGregor ahead of selecting his final squad for the summer Euros, due to his stunning current form for the newly-crowned champs.

McGregor was capped 42 times between 2007 and 2018 and, asked if Clarke should ask him back, McCoist said: “On the QT, absolutely.

“I wouldn’t make it public, but I’d certainly give him a wee phone call.

“Just to say, ‘Allan, by the way, just for the record, you are playing out of your skin’.

“Now let’s be clear. I’m not going to tell Steve Clarke how to do his job.

“I’m not going to start that carry-on because I know how difficult it is as a manager.

“But, my goodness, I’m sure everyone can agree.

“Should Allan McGregor be in the Scotland squad? Yes.

“Is that fair? Surely we are not going to argue whether he’s good enough to be in the Scotland squad on current form?

“So, on that basis, we’ve always said we want to take our best squad and our best players to the tournament.

“Find out. Listen, Allan might say no. If that’s the case, no harm done. Everyone moves on.”
