Allan McGregor handed Rangers £50m transfer declaration as Kris Boyd issues ‘sign him quick’ plea

Nervous Kris Boyd has warned Rangers that replacing Allan McGregor next season would come with a huge price tag.

The 39-year-old showed his class against Slavia Prague with a stunning last minute stop at the Sinobo Stadium to keep out a bullet header from sub Lukas Masopust.

It stop handed Steven Gerrard’s team a 1-1 draw to take back to Glasgow in the second leg.

Gerrard revealed after the game that a contract offer has been tabled for the Ibrox veteran, but former striker Boyd believes action must be taken quickly.

McGregor has been a key performer for the newly-crowned Premiership champions, and Boyd told the Sky Sports Scottish Football podcast that it would take more than £50m to recruit a similar calibre stopper.

He said: “He’s been outstanding for a number of years now. It won’t be long before he signs a new deal, there is no doubt about that.

“With everything that was going on it was the right thing for Rangers to do to wait and see, because maybe Allan wants to go out on a high, but for me he needs to sign a new deal and sign it quick.

“For what you’ve got in the building right now, you ain’t going to replace him. It doesn’t matter if you go and spend £30m, £40m, £50m you ain’t going to replace him.

“We’ve seen Celtic spend £5m on Barkas and been miles off it, what price would it actually cost to replace Allan McGregor?

“It allows Steven Gerrard and Rangers to go and spend the money elsewhere to strengthen their team because there is nobody better, especially in Scotland but even in the UK he is right up there with the best goalkeepers.

“He’s 39 years old but he’s still phenomenal. Had that been a save in the English Premier League it would have been everywhere.”
