Allan Johnston signs Queen of the South extension as he targets play-off push

Allan Johnston has committed his future to Queen of the South after penning a new two-year deal in Dumfries.

Johnston has driven the Doonhamers into the Premiership play-off reckoning after a turgid start to the season.

Queens picked up only four points from their opening nine matches but a run of one defeat in 10 after Christmas reignited their campaign and they sit three points off the play-off spots with three games left ahead of Saturday’s trip to Dunfermline.

The former Rangers, Hearts and Scotland star, in his second spell in charge at Palmerston, has now signed a deal through to 2023 as has his assistant Sandy Clark.

Johnston said: “I am delighted to get it sorted. We still have three big games left of this season and they must be our focus for now as we want to try to get into the play-offs.

“We want to finish strongly so we can look forward and start planning for next year. Queens are a good club with big potential so I am happy to commit for another two years and hope to take the club as high as possible”.

Queens chairman Billy Hewitson said: “Since returning to the club, particularly since the turn of the year, they have shown what they can do.

“We are happy they have signed the new deal and they can now continue to focus on the remainder of the season and see where that takes us”.
