All you needed to know about new UP deputy CM Brajesh Pathak

NEW DELHI: Brajesh Pathak has been made the new deputy chief minister in the Yogi Adityanath government.

Pathak, 57, contested the recently-concluded Uttar Pradesh assembly election from Lucknow Cantt. Bagging 1,08,147 votes, he defeated his nearest rival Surendra Singh Gandhi of Samajwadi Party by a margin of 39,512 votes.

He was a minister of legislative, justice and rural engineering service in the last Yogi Adityanath cabinet.

Pathak won the 2017 UP assembly election from Lucknow Central constituency on a BJP ticket. He defeated his nearest rival Ravidas Mehrotra of Samajwadi Party (SP).

He was first made a cabinet minister of law and justice. His portfolio was changed in the first cabinet expansion of Adityanath ministry in August 2019.

Lawyer by profession, Pathak was an MP of Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). He was a BSP Lok Sabha MP from Unnao between 2004 and 2009.

He joined BJP ahead of 2017 UP assembly election in the presence of Union home minister Amit Shah and other party leaders.

Pathak is a prominent Brahmin face in UP politics.

He replaces Dinesh Sharma, another Brahmin, as the deputy chief minister in Yogi Adityanath government.
