All you need to know about the Rare Blue Moon to be visible over Ireland on Halloween

A rare full moon is set to light up the night skies on Halloween this year for the first time in over 40 years.

And star gazers have been urged to get their cameras at the ready to catch a snap of the rare lunar phenomenon as there won't be another one for quite some time.

While it's hoped the rare event won't lead to an influx of werewolves prowling across the country, it likely won't stop people from stepping outside to be dazzled by the event.

The last time a full moon was seen on 31 October was all the way back in 1974.

Here's all you need to know about the rare moon.

When can I see it?

The rare blue moon will be visible from 3pm tomorrow.

Why is it called a Blue Moon

The Halloween moon has been dubbed a Blue Moon as it is the second full moon this month.

When will the next blue moon be visible on Halloween?

People are urged to get a good glimpse of the moon and take as many snaps as they can because the phenomenon only occurs once every few decades.

There won't be a full moon on Halloween until 2039.

Do I need a good camera to take a photo?

Chair of Astronomy Ireland David Moore said that “even cameraphones can take great photos of the Moon these days, either close up, or against a backdrop of buildings, statues or landscapes”.

He also urged people to be patient “even if the skies are a bit cloudy”, because all it takes is for the moon to “pop out during a break in the clouds, and you’ve got it”.
