All you need to know about Nottingham Forest 'target' Tom Lockyer

Nottingham Forest are rumoured to be interested in making a move for ex-Bristol Rovers defender Tom Lockyer.

The Wales International has refused a new deal at Rovers and is available for the Reds to pick up on a free.

But who is he? Who else is after the 24-year-old? And what are the chances of him making the switch to the City Ground.

Searching for football at a higher level

BirstolLive reported on Sunday that Lockyer's departure at the Memorial Stadium was the next step in his search for football at a higher level.

The 6ft 1in centre back has only ever played for the Gas, having graduated from their academy back in 2012.

284 appearances later, and his eight years in Bristol have come to an end upon the expiry of his contract.

There is no doubt that a Championship club will come in for Lockyer.

The Cardiff-born, and ex-Cardiff youth player, has been attracting attention from the second division for more than twelve months, with Aitor Karanka's Forest understood to have had their eye on him back in 2018.

International defender

His impressive performances in League One as Rovers' club captain caught the eye on ex-Wales boss Chris Coleman when he was handed his first international cap in 2017.

He was already a regular for Wales' Under-21s side and made the step up to the senior team for games against Serbia, Moldova, Panama, Albania and Austria, and will head away with them yet again this summer.

Still undecided

Despite being named on Bristol Rovers' released list, his time at the Memorial Stadium may not be over just yet.

The defender is still relatively undecided as he continues to weigh up offers from as many as four Championship clubs.

"I've got to go away with Wales this summer so it will be nice to have something done before that, whether we'll able to or not will be a different story," Lockyer told BristolLive.

"I've had a few conversations with Marcus Stewart and old managers and players, and kind of said, 'what would you do in my situation?' because I've never been here before, it's always just been I'm coming back to Cribbs in the summer and cracking on with pre-season with everyone I know.

"He said to me, personally, looking back on my career I always remember the promotions I've had, they are what stick out for me so if I was you I'd be doing that. That did hit hard.

"But then I've had other people said get yourself in the Champ and go and get 40 Championship games under your belt and see where that takes you.

"Realistically there are four Championship teams who are willing to put something on the table and there's a few other League One teams."

Defensive leader

The physical defender has been honing his skills as a leader for Rovers over the past few seasons.

Now with a wealth of Football League experience under his belt, Lockyer is an aggressive and dominant defender.

While by no means being a ball-playing centre-back he does have a turn of pace and was much adored in blue and white.
