What better way to enjoy a scone than fresh from the oven? These small biscuit-like cakes have always been a staple in the UK afternoon tea sets and have been ingrained in my travelling and studying experiences there. So, of course, being back in Thailand, if there's one thing I miss, it is a good scone. Located in the busy streets of Ari, Witty Ville aims to give customers what they want -- a well-made scone.
The bakery's light blue exterior stands out among other establishments on the street as if it were lifted straight out of the UK. Small in space with barely any seating room, the bakery is best for grab 'n' go orders, instead of dining in.
With her love for scones and baking, owner Kullanat "Kul" Opaspongsakorn never expected to open a bakery. After earning a master's degree in London, she decided to take a small baking course at Le Cordon Bleu. She soon realised, after years of working in marketing, that she had to pursue her baking interests and created the whimsically-named Witty Ville bakery.

All items are baked and prepared by Kul. The scones, priced at B55 per piece, come in a variety of flavours. I may be a bit biased, but the best kind of scone is plain, served with homemade clotted cream and jam. This pairing is essential for a good scone apart from it being light and soft. The Nutella scone is exactly what you would you expect. Made of my favourite kind of chocolate -- dark -- the scone contains the hazelnut-flavoured cocoa cream in the centre. Happiness in a scone! Craving a savoury scone? The Bacon and cheese is right up your alley. Other options include cranberry, orange blossom, raspberry and apricot, as well as white chocolate, which comes in three versions -- with strawberry, macadamia or green tea. That's not all, Kul experiments with new flavours all the time, featuring a monthly special scone. The Black sesame scone is far from sweet and is nutty in taste providing something different. You can also order a special snack box with eight scones for B660.
Apart from scones, the bakery offers Banana bread (B55 per slice), which comes in traditional and chocolate flavours. While both are moist and tender, they're pretty standard. Rounding out the bakery are Brownies (B65), Fruit cakes (B75), Cookies ranging from almond, black sesame, butter, and oatmeal cranberry raisin (B25-B45 for small packets, B120 for small jars, B250 for bags), and Granola (B120 for small jars, B250 for bags). Although points given for variety, it's clear that the heart and soul of the bakery lies in the scones.
Hot and iced drinks range from milk, teas and soda pops. The Yuzu honey is a definite must-try (B75), providing pleasantly balanced taste of sour and sweet.
Those who live around Ari and who are hankering for some good quality scones or heck, have never even tried the British favourite will have an excellent chance to fulfill that fix. Get 'em while they're hot! g
