All Wetherspoons in Wales are having a one-day sale next week

To highlight and mark Tax Equality Day Wetherspoons are cutting the price of their food and drink for just one day next week.

The popular pub chain which has venues throughout Wales will be offering 7.5% off all food and drink on Thursday, September 23, and is hoping to show what the benefit of a permanent tax reduction would mean for the hospitality industry.

This means you can get 7.5% off anything from a curry to a gin in all Wetherspoons across Wales. The offer will only be running on Thursday.

Currently, pubs are charged 5% VAT for all food and drink by the government however from Friday, October 1 this will increase to a 12.5% VAT charge.

Throughout the rest of the year and into 2022 the government aims for VAT to return to 20%.

While this may be part of the UK recovering economically from the pandemic, supermarkets are not taxed VAT at all on food allowing them to sell alcohol at a reduced price.

Richard Lowther, the manager of Central Bar on Windsor Place, Cardifft, said: "It is unfair that supermarkets pay zero VAT on food, but pubs and restaurants, in normal circumstances, pay 20%."

He added: "We urge the Chancellor to create tax equality between pubs and supermarkets by making the current VAT regime for pubs permanent."
