All welcome at this Christmas lunch

It is the Christmas season, and at this time of year people turn their minds to family, friends, and how they will spend Christmas Day.

For some though, financial pressures, family conflict, and loneliness can mean Christmas Day is quite sad and difficult.

At Samaritans, we believe that Christmas should be a time everyone feels cared for and included.

Samaritans has been hosting community lunches on Christmas Day for many years in the Hunter region and on the Central Coast.

Our Christmas lunches are open to anyone who would like some company, or who may not otherwise have the means to celebrate. So, if you would like someone to share Christmas Day lunch with, please join us. No catch, no strings, no cost.

Just turn up, no need to bring anything.

You can come alone or you can bring your loved ones, and you don't have to RSVP.

You will join 1500-plus people across Newcastle, Singleton and Wyong who will be at Samaritans Christmas Lunch; an event full of Christmas cheer, good company and a visit from Santa.

There is a long list of local businesses who generously sponsor the events, and our Shout Lunch campaign collects donations from the community.

As a guest, you will be welcomed by one of hundreds of volunteers who will make sure your Christmas is merry and bright.

Our annual community lunches are a way for Samaritans to "walk the walk" in showing compassion for our neighbours and caring for our community.

Through our work in the community, we know that Christmas can be a tough time for many people.

Despite working hard, many families can find it difficult to keep food on the table and the bills paid, let alone have the spare money for Christmas presents and a festive lunch. Holidays can also be a hard time when dealing with grief and loss.

So, if you would like to share a festive meal with some cheerful company on Christmas Day, Samaritans welcomes you.

Samaritans Christmas Day lunches are hosted at Newcastle Foreshore Park (Wharf Road), Singleton Senior Citizens Centre (Bathurst Street) and Wyong Race Club (Howarth Street). Each event begins at 11am on December 25.

Come and enjoy the spirit of Christmas at Samaritans Christmas Day lunch. You are welcome.

Brad Webb is chief executive officer of the Samaritans Foundation.
