All Wear Bowlers

A silent, grainy film with piano accompaniment. Two bowler-hatted men appear on screen and set out across the landscape walking towards their future. But they haven't got very far when they fall out with each other and then out of the screen into the theatre. They stare terrified at us for a moment and then one of them declares, pointing at the audience: "OK. There's two of us and only one of them."

The first 20 minutes of this Laurel and Hardy-style vaudevillian two-hander are as slick and funny as anything you'll see. It is a technical tour de force, so accomplished that it takes your breath away. It finishes in high style, too, making the laughter die on your lips as you realise that, like Beckett's two tramps, the pair are walking towards oblivion, to the point where the theatre lights go out.

There is plenty to enjoy, though there is also quite a bit of padding in the slapstick routines, the ventriloquist's dummy and the clowning. But it is clever stuff that entertainingly plays with the audience, proving that you can make an omelette without cracking eggs.
