'All we want is to go home' Honeymooning couple stranded in Spain after flight suddenly cancelled

A honeymooning couple have spoken of their misery after their flight home to Scotland was cancelled 30 minutes before they were due to board.

Jo and Craig Mulholland were enjoying their honeymoon in Costa Adeje in Tenerife and expected to fly home with Ryanair to Edinburgh on Saturday (March 14).

However, they received a text from the airline while they were at the gate telling them their flight was cancelled.

Ryanair did not provide any information on the reason behind the sudden cancellation.

Earlier this week, Jet2 confirmed that they have taken the decision to cancel all flights to mainland Spain as well as the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands due to the growing coronavirus pandemic.

This led to one flight from Glasgow to Spain doing a sudden u-turn in the air and returning to the UK.

Jo spoke to Glasgow Live about the stress the newlyweds are now under, hoping to encourage fellow Glaswegians to rethink any travel plans they have during the coronavirus outbreak.

She said: "We were able to reschedule our flight to Saturday 21st March as this was the first available flight for us and book ourselves some accommodation.

"We were told that Ryanair 'may cover reasonable costs' for hotel and food, however they wouldn't advise what reasonable is. He did advise that we can submit the claim and see, there is no guarantee. We have no idea what 'reasonable; is deemed as.

"We have two cats at home that were being looked after, but we are concerned for their welfare as if it was going to be this long that we were stuck, we would have arranged other care for them."

Jo and Craig are also now having to self-isolate in their apartment due to the new restrictions in place in Spain.

She said: "Our honeymoon was meant to be a relaxing and joyful experience but this has completely dampened our spirits. All we want is to get home and ensure our animals are safe and we are safe.

"We are really lucky we do not have children involved with our circumstances like other people do. We will be refusing to fly with Ryanair ever again due to this experience."

A spokesman for Ryanair said: "All cancellations are due to the current Covid-19 crisis.
