All we know so far about the large fire at Veolia in Nottingham

An "immediate investigation" will take place after crews were called to a large fire in a waste management building in Nottinghamshire.

On Tuesday evening (September 22), witnesses spotted plumes of black smoke rising over the city close to the Lady Bay Bridge.

Pictures taken from the bridge showed roaring flames at the Veolia waste management building at the industrial site alongside the River Trent.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed the fire broke out just after 4pm and the site was evacuated.

No injuries were reported.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had responded to an incident in Freeth Street, Colwick with reports there were five pumps in use and an aerial ladder platform.

Nottinghamshire Police also attended the scene and some of the surrounding roads were closed including Moorland Street and Poulton Drive.

Residents in the area were encouraged to keep their windows closed due to the amount of smoke in the area, which could be seen from as far away as East Midlands Airport.

Some Nottinghamshire Live readers described a smell of 'burning rubber' in the area.

Despite being a stones throw from Meadow Lane, the Notts County match was unaffected.

A Veolia spokesperson said: “We can confirm that at 4.20pm today (September 22) a fire broke out in the residual waste at the Freeth Street Transfer Station in Nottinghamshire.

“Staff on site responded quickly in line with our procedures and the Fire Brigade has the situation under their control.

“The site was safely evacuated, there were no injuries and the cause of the fire will be the subject of an immediate investigation.”

A statement from the police read:  "Residents are encouraged to keep windows closed as emergency services respond to a report of a fire in the industrial estate in Freeth Street, Colwick.

“Nottinghamshire Police is in attendance supporting colleagues in Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service while they tackle the fire. Police were called at around 5.55pm and remain at the scene.”

Fire crews were still at the scene as of 10pm.
