All Tory councillors unelected in Portishead as the town turns to independents

There's been a major shakeup in Portishead politics as residents voted out all of the town's Conservative councillors in favour of independent candidates.

Results from last night's local elections have already been described by  North Somerset local election results 2019: Conservatives to lose control after 'whitewash' as the party lost control of North Somerset Council for the first time in a decade.

To add to the party's woes, all seven of Portishead's Conservative town councillors were defeated today - including the authority's chair and vice chariman.

Instead residents voted for councillors standing as independents in a move which could be judged as a disillusionment with mainstream politics.

Announcing the news on Facebook one resident said: "Independents are now the largest group of the council.

"Town council result, all Tories unseated.

"Independents 12, two Liberal Democrats."

Many took to social media to celebrate the news.

One woman wrote on Facebook: "I think we will see major changes for the better. Let's be honest, it couldn't get any worse. The only way is up!"

While another said: "My votes were for a brighter future for my children and grandchildren. Not a protest vote - I am keeping that for a general election."

It wasn't all bad for the Tories today, they still managed to keep control of South Gloucestershire Council.

The Conservative Party won 33 seats with 42 per cent of the vote, the Liberal Democrats won 17 seats with 32 per cent of the vote and the Labour Party won 11 seats with 21 per cent of the vote.
