All of the about 70,000 Tokyo Games volunteers will be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine if they wish, the organizing committee announced Saturday.
Previously, the organizing committee had received from the International Olympic Committee enough doses to cover about 40,000 people, aimed at promoting the vaccination of domestic athletes and people related to the Tokyo Games.
Volunteers had been prioritized based on their expected frequency of contact with athletes. How to handle the vaccination of volunteers who do not have the opportunity to be inoculated at workplaces and other venues has been an issue.
So the Tokyo metropolitan government has offered to provide the organizing committee with vaccines developed by U.S. biotechnology firm Moderna, Inc. to help make up for the shortfall in doses for all volunteers.
Eligible volunteers are those who have residence certificates in Japan. The first doses of the vaccination will begin on June 30 and the second will begin on July 31.
