All the world's a MySpace page

The blog's the thing... MySpace is proving increasingly popular with theatres and drama groups. Photograph: Nicholas Kamm/AFP

Want to meet new people? Want to hook up with people who like the same stuff as you? Want to hang out with the kids? Just head on over to Rupert's place.

Following in the steps of countless musicians and numberless comics, it seems that theatres, independent cinemas and galleries are heading for MySpace.

As Steven McElroy suggests in the New York Times, it's the young they're after - though on second glance the paltry 28.4% of users under age 34 he quotes makes MySpace look a little greyer than its image.

Playwrights Horizons, an independent theatre in New York, declares itself to be a single 34-year-old male, which is "here" for "networking" and "friends" - all 749 of them.

The Dance Theatre Workshop, on the other hand is 41 years old, female and a virgo. Sadly, she only has 133 friends to count on.

It's not just happening stateside. London's Rio cinema - a spry 97 year old who rather confusingly doesn't "want kids" - has already gathered 329 mates, though since one of them seems to be the London borough of Hackney, perhaps things aren't quite what they seem.

One for the Lovers, a 33-year-old female from Stoke Newington, is clearly delighted. "Oh this is brilliant!" she gushes. "Now i can just look at your MySpace to see whats playing!! Coolio!!xx"

Which leaves me a little puzzled. Surely OftL could have just visited the Rio cinema's perfectly reasonable website? But maybe there's no place for such negativity in Rupert's happy world. One thing MySpace has already proved is that cynicism gets you precisely no mates.
