1 Avengers: Infinity War
Most of this 2018 film starring Robert Downey Junior and Scarlett Johansson was filmed in studios but they made an exception for some street scenes recorded in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Waverley Station and the Royal Mile were backdrops for fight scenes, and a jewellery shop on Cockburn Street was transformed into a kebab takeaway joint for shooting.
2 Eurovision Song Contest: The Fire Saga
The 2020 musical comedy starring Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbeam features fleeting views of Newhaven harbour, Calton Hill, Arthur’s Seat, Victoria Street and a hotel on Albany Street, where popstars Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdóttir from the Icelandic band Fire Saga are staying.
3 One Day
Anne Hathaway, Ken Stott and Tim Key all star in this 2011 drama, based on the book by Mike Nicholls. It’s about two students who graduate from the University of Edinburgh then move to London. If you’re really paying attention, you’ll spot Parliament Square, Moray Place, Victoria Street and Arthur’s Seat – on screen for just a few minutes of the movie.
4 The Midnight Sky
Portobello beach gets an unexpected shout out in George Clooney’s recent Netflix movie, The Midnight Sky , which is also the most streamed movie on the streaming platform right now. It pops up at the start of the film when it’s described as a beautiful place, “just off the coast off Edinburgh,” then weirdly, it’s never mentioned again.
5 Hold up
That’s not London that we see at the beginning of the 2010 American horror flick, The Awakening . The scenes from England’s capital were actually filmed in Scotland ’s capital, on Stockbridge’s Bernard Crescent to be precise.
