Consumer group Which? revealed that Southport is joint 8th in the ten worst seaside resorts in the UK, along with New Brighton.
This ranking seemed a little harsh on the coastal resort, with the area offering Funland, Ocean Plaza, recently opened footgolf and miles of golden sand.
The sea may only make a rare appearance, but the beach itself is lovely.
On top of it being a family day out with plenty of things to do, there is also the annual Southport Air Show that attracts thousands of spectators every year before Covid cancelled last year’s event.
The resort boasts local independent restaurants as well as big name chains. You even have Pleasureland which is a day out in itself.
Southport isn’t perfect. The blurry eyed dream is cut short when you look at the expensive parking and the poor roads, as well as constant roadworks on the coastal road, but it doesn’t stop thousands of tourists flocking to the seaside every year.
Southport has, and probably always will be, a tourist dependent town. Gone are the days of the outdoor pool and the beauty of the local hotels, but the town still prides itself on the number of tourists that come in and out of the town.
The new town deal, securing £37.5m for the town, looks to freshen the area up with a complete remodel of Marine Lake along with the refurbished Southport Market set to open this year.
Southport beach even has a 4.2 star rating on Google. Here’s what some people love about the resort.

Michael Babel said: “Definitely not the prettiest beach, but if you are after infinite walks and want to be left alone, this place could be it. I reckon you can spend days walking here and still feel like on a different planet.
“Plenty of parking available, lots of views to take in, one section is close to shopping mall (3-hour free parking) so some necessities are close-by too.”
Ruth Johnston said: “After a year of lockdown it was great to go to a clean beach build sandcastles, play ball etc. was a pity the tide was out but there was still plenty to do to occupy my 3yr old grandchild, excellent park nearby plus the boating lake.”
Jason Rigby said: “Nice for a family day out. Sea is not in very often so when it is out there is plenty of room on the beach. Plenty of places for something to eat also. There are rides for kids and places to hire boats.”
‘Sunny Southport’ is set for a bright future whilst not forgetting its vast history.
