Why I’m A Celeb 2021 was the most disastrous series ever - hospital dash to £1m set damage

I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! comes to an end tonight, with a new celebrity set to become the new King of Queen of the Castle.

After David Ginola's shock exit on Saturday night's show, Frankie Bridge, Danny Miller and Corrie's Simon Gregson are the trio left battling it out for the castle crown, after a lacklustre series.

Since returning to Gwrych Castle in North Wales last month, the long-running ITV show has been hit with a string of disasters which have put a dampener on this year's offering.

With viewing figures falling well behind in comparison to popular previous seasons, a combination of factors have impacted the production of the reality TV show.

From early celebrity exits to the show being taken off air for the first time in its history, it's not been smooth sailing for the once unmissable show.

Last month, just days after the launch of the 21st series, star signing Richard Madeley bid an early farewell to the camp due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The Good Morning Britain presenter was "livid" after being forced to quit the ITV show - despite being "absolutely fine" - after a late-night trip to the hospital.

The news of the broadcaster's exit came just hours after it was revealed that the star had temporarily left the castle for hospital treatment - therefore breaking the campmate's Covid bubble.

Just days after losing one of the celebrity campers earlier than expected, Storm Arwen arrived in town and forced the show to come off-air for three days.

The I'm A Celeb stars were even evacuated from the Welsh castle during the intense weather conditions - with the damage to the set being so severe, many even feared this year's series could be scrapped completely.

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! returned to our screens on Tuesday 30 November, but not everyone was still tuning in to catch up on what was going on in the castle.

The overnight ratings for the broadcast showed an average of 5.4 million viewers - almost one million down on the 6.37million who had watched the last show before the three-day hiatus.

After returning to Wales over Australia for the second year running, the 2021 series of the Ant and Dec hosted show fell behind previous series when it came to viewing figures.

In the 2018 edition - filmed in Australia -the ITV show attracted an incredible 12.14 million viewers, as King of the Jungle Harry Redknapp won over the nation's hearts.

Despite intense weather conditions making the castle absolutely freezing, this hasn't stopped viewers and stars from previous series claim producers have been 'going easy' on this year's intake.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Fleur East - who enjoyed a stint in the jungle in 2018 - admitted she was "jealous" of "heated rooms and showers" rumoured to be in place inside the castle.

"It’s a completely different environment to Australia," she mused when chatting about the differences now the show is set in Wales.

"Obviously, we’re in the middle of the jungle so you’ve got brown, deadly snakes that can slither under your hammock at any time which is terrifying.

And obviously the freezing cold waterfall we had to bath under every single day and even after trials, all you want is a hot shower, you know what I mean? And we just couldn’t get that."

With only one woman making it all the way to tonight's final - Loose Women's Frankie - I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! has also had to handle some sexism claims during this year's series.

Louise Minchin admitted she was 'disappointed' to be the fourth woman eliminated from the castle on Thursday night.

With her departure leaving just Frankie and five men in the camp, the former BBC Breakfast presenter was honest when quizzed about yet another woman being voted off the show.

"I am disappointed that is the case… there is only one Frankie Bridge, she is incredible, strong, stronger than she thinks she is," Louise shared earlier this week.

She also tipped The Saturdays singer to win the show ahead of David, Simon and Danny.

* I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
