
A change of venue and a few drops of rain did little to dampen the vibe when The Drop music festival returned to Newcastle last weekend.
Moved to Bar Beach's Empire Park after debuting at King Edward Park last year, the travelling festival drew a crowd of about 5000 to see the likes of Aussie electronic dance duo The Presets and folk rockers Boy & Bear.
The all-ages gig kicked off with Newcastle band The Pits charging through a typically energetic set of brass-infused cabaret punk. These guys are well worth a look if you haven't caught them yet in Newcastle.
Singer-songwriters Graace and Kita Alexander set a more mellow vibe before DZ Deathrays raised the volume and intensity with a mosh-friendly cameo.
LA-based Aussie rapper Allday warmed up the swelling crowd for Brisbane pop-rock outfit and Triple J darlings Ball Park Music.
Boy & Bear took the stage as the sun went down, before The Presets ended the night with a pumped-up set of dance tunes.
The all-ages venue, with a stage pointing away from houses and towards the beach, worked well, despite a few muddy spills on a slippery plastic floor laid down to protect the cricket pitch.
