All the other regions who are in Tier 2 and Tier 3 across the UK

Millions of people will continue to face stringent restrictions on their lives as the government announced the latest tier system for the country.

A government website has now revealed that Liverpool will shift into Tier 2 after December 2 but Manchester will be in Tier 3.

According to people who used the postcode checker, the following areas were among those in the strictest Tier 3: Manchester, Hull, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Newcastle, Bristol, Kent including Thanet and Leeds.

Around 21 local authority areas will be in the highest level of restrictions - Tier 3 - including Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Tees Valley Combined Authority and North East Combined Authority.

Lancashire, Leicester, Lincolnshire, Slough, Bristol, Kent and Medway will also be in Tier 3.

The government's decision to move Liverpool back into Tier 2 is seen by many as a vindication of the city's mass testing drive.

The postcode checker appeared to crash as shorty after it went live. It initially showed that Kent would be in the toughest Tier 3, but people checking later were faced with the message: "Sorry, we're experiencing technical difficulties."

Shadow Commons leader Valerie Vaz has raised the postcode checker issue in Parliament - minutes before Matt Hancock was supposed to tell MPs first about the tiers.

She said: "This is an absolutely appalling way to treat Parliament... The website has crashed because everybody is on it."

Speaker Lindsay Hoyle said : "This House should be informed first. It is not acceptable to put it online. The only good thing is it's crashed so it's not helpful!"

The new system will finally lift the month-long national lockdown in England - allowing shops, gyms and hairdressers to reopen.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will hold a press conference on the new measures this evening.
