Mixed beans, Demeter beetoot and Red Baron onions make for great Sunday supper
Howard is back, and so are the bees. What we won't be seeing again are the tomatoes. Arrive to blighted plants, broken dreams, dashed hopes. For our second year, we won't be picking warm fruit from the vine and eating them there and then.
Leah, Lene and Dylan help with sorting our onions
The great shame was there was cascades of green fruit that had to be wheelbarrowed to the bin. Suspected all week that the wet would get to them. A few plots seem unaffected and Mary is still spraying Bordeaux mixture but for us, for another year, it is over.
The bees are back, but we are still mystified why the spend a day on each flower
Better news on the beans, we had a good crop of barlotti, the Blue Lake were prolific and terrific, and the Trail of Tears performed as brilliantly as before. We also did pretty well with our Red Baron onions. The beetroot has been wonderful and Mary confirms that our cardinal's robe-coloured leaves are Bulls Blood, which she's found on a trip to Heligan. She bought some seed there so we should be able to get hold of more, too. If you know of a stockist please pass their details on to us?
So, anyway, rats got the potatoes, blight got the tomatoes and the fox got the camera case. All in all, though, a successful year. Just loving being there.
