There’s nothing quite like a drop of new Pokémon in Pokémon GO. That’s the heart of the game for me: to see that little silhouette on the nearby tracker and just follow it, picking another one up from there and seeing where you wind up. The drops aren’t as big as they used to be, but the chance to crack into a new generation is always a fun one. Today marks the release of Gen 6, consisting of Pokémon originally discovered in the Kalos region of Pokémon X and Y.
Here’s who we’ve got showing up today, as per the announcement. These Pokémon are already live in much of the world, but they’ll show up at 10:00 AM local time wherever you are:
- Chespin
- Fennekin
- Froakie
- Bunnelby
- Fletchling
- Litleo
- Noibat
- Klefki (French Exclusive)
- Espurr (already live, in Raids)
Again, not the biggest drop. Similar to last year, we’re seeing the starters and a few of what will likely become fairly common spawns going forward. Every generation comes with a bird and a rodent, and we’re seeing those now in the form of Fletchling and Bunnelby. Litleo and Noibat are a little more interesting, however, so I’ll be after these.
In addition, these creatures are coming out of eggs, as per the Pokémon GO blog:
- Bunnelby, Fletchling, and Litleo will be hatching from 2 km Eggs.
- Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie will be hatching from 5 km Eggs.
- Espurr and Noibat will be hatching from 10 km Eggs.
Pokémon X and Y mark an interesting milestone for me, personally. I fell off of Pokémon in college and early adulthood, but X and Y is where I picked it back up. The reason is simple: when Pokémon GO came out and took over the world, they were the newest games available, even if Sun and Moon were released a few months later. We can see the mobile game slowly catching up to the mainline RPGs: at this rate the game will likely run out of new content in 2023, or 2024 if we get a new mainline Pokémon game in the meantime. I’m sure Niantic has a plan for when that happens, because at this point I think we can assume the game will last that long.
