All the major construction projects under way in Cardiff

After months of lockdown, life is slowly beginning to return to normal in Cardiff.

The deserted city centre is starting to resemble its former bustling self, and with more of us returning to the centre after potentially months away, some parts may look unfamiliar.

A number of massive developments are currently under way in the capital with several cranes towering above the skyline.

Although builders downed tools for months during the coronavirus lockdown, work has restarted across the city.

These are some of the biggest projects under way across Cardiff. All images were taken on August 23.

Custom House

Work is under way to transform this well-known building into a huge hotel and restaurant.

Aviva Investors, through its Lime Property Fund, agreed to fund the 20-storey hotel, bar and restaurant scheme back in 2018.

The deal, at the site of the empty Custom House and York Hotel buildings at the bottom of St Mary Street, was worth £34m.

The site had laid empty for several years, but now several storeys are already up with a huge crane towering above the site.

Aviva Investors have been approached for a comment.

Bradley Court

Another of the massive cranes in the city's skyline is helping build a block of student flats.

Bradley Court and the adjoining 11 Park Place, were bought up by Select Property Group, which is transforming the site through its Vita Student brand.

The 30,000 sq ft spot is right across from City Hall. Despite the crane, the development is only a few storeys high.

The developers have been approached for comment.

Easy Hotel

Work is well under way on the 120-room hotel by the brand best known for its cheap flights.
The site at 1-3 Fitzalan Place was once home to Cromwell House, which was demolished to make way for the new development.
The company hopes to open in spring 2021.

Dumballs Road

How the site currently looks (Mark Lewis)

Initial work is under way on a £25m apartment for rent scheme on Dumballs Road.

More than 200 apartments will be built at the site by developer PLATFORM.

The scheme, ranging from eight to 12 storeys, is on the former Browning Jones & Morris builder' merchants site at Dumballs Road close to Cardiff Central Railway Station.

Each of the scheme's blocks will also have communal landscaped courtyards with roof terraces.

The developers said: "PLATFORM_ completed preliminary groundworks prior to lockdown and intends to commence construction shortly, The building will be completed by the end of 2022.

"The events of the past few months have reinforced the need to provide purpose-built and professionally managed residential buildings for rent. PLATFORM_ Cardiff will enable residents to live in a safe and comfortable environment, within walking distance of the city centre."

John Street Offices

One of the biggest developments in Cardiff, the John Street site involves three interlocking blocks with heights of 21 storeys, 11 storeys and nine storeys.

A new hotel which developers want to build as part of a 27-storey building has also been given the go-ahead.

Construction work on the new 107,000 sq ft office building from developer JR Smart, reached a key milestone in February with the completion of the ground floor ‘slab.’

A tower crane moved on to the site at Callaghan Square before Christmas, to allow construction of the office building’s 10 storeys.

Brains Brewery

(Mark Lewis)

One of the most recognisable sites in the capital is currently being transformed into a 2.5m sq ft of office, residential and leisure space.

The brewery on Crawshay Street has been owned by Brains since 1999 and produced its beer for two decades before the company moved to a new headquarters on the outskirts of the city in 2019.

Demolition work at the site started in November although a number of former buildings still remain.

Cardiff Bus Station

After long delays, work is under way to finally return a bus station to the centre of the city.

In June work finally restarted on the long-awaited bus station, five years after the old one was lost to city redevelopment.

The capital has been without a main station since 2015 and the multi-million project to replace it has been subject to long delays.

Several different plans for a transport interchange have been put forward and scrapped over the last six years, but work finally started in December.

The site is now stretching far above the skyline, towering over the newly opened BBC studios next door.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “The bus interchange will increase integrated public transport across the region.

"Construction is progressing well and the bus interchange is scheduled to be operational by Summer 2023.”

Cardiff University Centre for Student Life

Work is progressing well on the impressive-looking Cardiff University Centre for Student Life near the Cathays train station.

When finished, it'll include a 550-seat auditorium, consultation rooms and study spaces.

It's being built in partnership with the students union, and construction started back in September 2018.
