All the Leeds Merrion Centre stores forced to close as police guard cordon in Leeds city centre

A number of shops in the Merrion Centre have been forced to close today due to an ongoing police incident.

Greggs, Chilli-Shop, Coral, KFC, and Cafe Nero are currently closed this morning (September 14), as a large police cordon remains in place at the corner of Merrion Street and Wade Lane.

An eye-witness who works near to the shopping centre said the cordon had been in place when he arrived at work at 7am.

Meanwhile, The Chilli-Shop, which is situated behind the cordon area alongside the other closed shops, warned customers to "avoid the area".

In a social media post shared at 9am this morning - around the time most shops would usually be opening - The Chilli-Shop said: "Chilli-Shop cordoned off by police incident tape... avoid shop area @merrioncentre for the moment.

"Will keep you updated as we gather info. Note stocks of Hot Ones featured sauces are fine."

The nature of the incident is yet to be confirmed by West Yorkshire Police.

However, a police officer guarding the cordon has remained in place and crime scene investigators have been seen arriving at the scene.

Leeds Live have contacted West Yorkshire Police for comment.
