Dozens of Labour MPs are demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation following a series of humiliating defeats at the local elections.
A minister and junior members of the government have now joined the chorus of backbenchers calling on Sir Keir Starmer to stand down after the party suffered heavy losses across England, Scotland and Wales.
Peckham MP Miatta Fahnbulleh resigned as faith and communities minister on Tuesday, telling the PM: “Our country faces enormous challenges and people are crying out for the scale of change that requires.
“The public does not believe that you can lead this change - and nor do I.”
Joe Morris who quit his role as a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Monday, saying it was “in the best interests of the country and the party that the prime minister sets out a swift timetable to ensure that a new leader is in place to regain the confidence of the public.”
Tom Rutland, a PPS to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, has also stepped down saying: "It is with regret that I believe the prime minister should now set out a timetable for his departure and for a new leader to be chosen to lead the Labour Party and the country.”
Meanwhile, Sally Jameson, a PPS to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, also joined calls for Sir Keir to lay out a timetable for his departure from office.
Melanie Ward, PPS to the deputy prime minister David Lammy also quit her role along with Cabinet Office PPS Naushabah Khan, with both calling for new leadership at the head of the party.
At the local elections on May 7, Labour lost more than 1400 council seats, while Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and Zack Polanski’s Green Party secured historic wins, including their first London councils.
Labour defended a higher percentage of seats in the capital than elsewhere in the country, but the party still lost 459 seats in city and control of 11 councils.
Sir Keir has insisted that he will continue as prime minister in spite of the startling election results, even his own MPs are calling for his resignation.
One of those is the MP for Hornsey and Friern Barnet Catherine West, who has demanded the prime minister set a timetable of September for his departure.
She backed down from her earlier threat to gather the 81 Labour MPs needed to formally challenge Sir Keir’s leadership, but insists he must walk by September.
Health secretary Wes Streeting, former deputy leader Angela Rayner, and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham have all been mooted as contenders to replace Starmer should the opportunity arise.
Angela Rayner has launched a devastating attack on Sir Keir, demanding change “now”. The former Deputy Prime Minister called for the prime minister to “change our economic agenda to prioritise making people better off.”
But she stopped short of issuing a formal leadership challenge.
A longer timetable would allow time for Mr Burham to make a return to the Commons and join the leadership contest. His initial attempt to return to parliament in the Gordon and Denton by-election was blocked by Sir Keir.
Now, the number of MPs calling for Sir Keir’s departure is only growing.
Some have called for immediate change to leadership, while others have pushed for a timetabled departure this year.
