All the Edinburgh cafes and restaurants kids can eat free this Coronation bank holiday weekend

As King Charles III prepares for his big day to finally arrive on Saturday, May 6, many people will be getting excited about the prospect of a long weekend.

Monday, May 8 has been confirmed as a bank holiday across the UK, meaning that the majority of school children will get the day off to honour their new King.

So, with the kids off, and plenty of activities to keep them entertained - is there a way to keep them fed at a cheap price too?

Thanks to the Money Saving Expert website, there are plenty of restaurants, supermarkets and cafes that offer free meals - or super cheap ones - for children this bank holiday weekend.

Read on below to find out about the ones local to the capital, and what the deals are for savvy parents this weekend.

Morrisons Cafe

Morrisons are currently offering a free jacket potato and baked beans for anyone who approaches the tills and asks for Henry in their cafes.

This is a promotion in line with Heinz, in a bid to help struggling families feed their partners and children for a much cheaper price. There is no minimum spend, and it is available until May 7 - which is Sunday.

You are also asking for Henry because Henry Heinz is the founder of Heinz beans - in case you were wondering where the name came from.

Morrisons also offer that kids eat free if one adult buys a main meal in their cafes. The free kids' meal comes with a piece of fruit and Tropicana kids' orange or apple drink or bottle of water to drink.

Kids can choose between a hot meal on the café kids menu or a chilled kids' snack pack. The following items are some main meals available on the café kids' menu:

  • Macaroni cheese
  • Bangers and mash
  • Fish fingers and chips
  • Chicken nuggets, chips and peas

Dunelm Pausa Cafe

If you're visiting a Dunelm and fancy a bite to eat, head to its in-store café, Pausa, and kids can eat for 'free' when an adult spends £4.

No code is required, the promotion is automatically applied to the bill. This offer is available in all Pausa Cafés across the UK, Mondays to Fridays from 3pm until cafés close during term time.

Outside of term time, the offer is available all day, every day - though half term dates can differ depending on location, so it's worth checking with your local branch first.

The 'free' kids' meal includes a main, such as pizza, wraps and jacket potatoes, as well as two snacks and a drink. This would usually cost up to £5.25.

The £4 spend must be made in the Pausa Café (not Dunelm) and the deal applies to the entire kids' menu.

One child can eat for free with every £4 spent, so if you spend £8 then two children can claim a free meal.

Ikea

If you visit an Ikea store with a restaurant any day of the week from 11am, kids can eat a main meal from 95p. There's no minimum spend required and Ikea have confirmed that this offer will run until August 2024.

Kids will be able to get either cheese and tomato pasta with a drink for 95p - which is usually £2.20 with a drink included - or a meal for £1.50 which includes fruit and a soft drink.

The £1.50 meal with fruit and a soft drink typically comes to £2.50, so that's an extra quid in your pocket.

You don't need to be an Ikea Family member either to claim this deal.

Dobbies

Garden centre and cafe Dobbie's also offers a kids eat free deal if an adult main meal is purchased - these can cost anywhere from £8.95 to £11.75.

There's no code needed, this is automatically applied to your bill, and is available in every locations from opening time onwards.

Kids can choose from the children's breakfast and lunch menu, which includes hot food, as well as the pick & mix box – both are served with a drink. Kids' meals usually cost £5.20.

There's no limit to how many free meals can be claimed either, so for every adult main meal purchased, one free kids' lunch main or box is redeemable.

Brewers Fayre

Brewers Fayre are offering up to two children under the age of 16 a free breakfast each, if they are accompanied by an adult buying an unlimited cooked breakfast.

An unlimited adult cooked breakfast costs £9.50, so if a family of four have breakfast, it would work out at £4.75 per head.

This offer is valid during breakfast hours every day of the week and there is no code needed to claim this deal, as it is automatically applied to the bill.

Kids can choose from either a full cooked breakfast or a continental selection. The cooked breakfast options include:

  • bacon
  • sausages (vegan option also available)
  • eggs
  • hash browns
  • baked beans
  • cooked tomatoes
  • mushrooms
  • black pudding

The continental selection includes things like toast, pastries, yogurt and porridge. This deal is also available at all Premier Inn hotels and its integrated or adjoining Whitbread restaurants including Bar + Block, Beefeater, Table Table, and Whitbread Inns.
