From Grancha to Dutta, people in Wales have been sharing their names for granddads

One of the biggest decisions a grandparent can make is deciding what they want their grandkids to call them. In Wales there are a whole host of names we use to refer to our grandparents – from nain and taid or mamgu and tadcu to nanny and bampi or gran and grampa.

We asked our readers what they call their grandfathers and got a wide range of responses with some very moving stories of how their granddad got their 'name.' Many readers got in touch to say that their grandfathers took on a paternal role in their lives and so became 'Dad' rather than 'Granddad.'

Sheila Griffiths told a moving story of how her grandfather got his name: "I called my Grandfather 'Daddy'. My Dad was dead so my grandfather took on the role of a father to me and I couldn't have wished for a better one. Miss him still."

Tadcu (or dadcu) and taid were, of course, popular choices, with many readers saying that this was how they referred to their grandfather. Gwenfair Davies wrote: "Taid - when they were both alive. Our grandchildren call my husband Taidi." Elysia Garner added: "Taid for Welsh side and Granddad for English." Susan Rees added: "Dat and Grampy mine were, my husband is Dadcu to our grandchildren."

'Grancha' or 'Gransha' were also among the more popular answers. Alison Rees said: "My grown up kids call my dad grancha." Suzanne Whitfield added: "Dad and Grancha. My children also call my father Grancha and their fathers father Bampi." Clare Watkins Hillier wrote: "Mine was Gransha but my dad is bampi to his grandchildren."

While many readers said they called their grandfathers by the classic 'granddad' some had more unusual names. Pat Huish, for instance, said: "My grandfather on my father side was Dutta. On my mother's side was George. When an elderly aunt heard me calling him George she gave me a row. My grandfather heard her and gave her a row saying: 'I may be her grandfather but I am also her friend and my friends call me George.'"

Mandi Cater O'Brien's daughter also had an unusual name for her grandfather: "I only had one grandfather who I called Bampi. My children call their grandfathers Gramps and Bampa. Although my daughter called her Gramps 'Bertie' for the first couple of years. We can't work out why because his name is Philip."

Stephan Jones' name for his grandfather came from a mispronunciation. He said: "We called my Granddad 'Ducky' as when we were toddlers we couldn't pronounce "Dadcu". And it stuck until we were into our 30s."

Some readers wrote to tell us how they decided to choose the name they wanted to be called by the grandchildren. Wayne Carpenter has opted for 'dadcu,' saying: "I am called dadcu by my grandchildren, including the ones who are not Welsh speakers.

"It was my choice after listening to Max Boyce's track 9-3' In it he says the line: 'My Dad-Cu was there.' It is said with such a feeling of love the it tugged on my heartstrings. I just hope that my grandchildren feel the same love for me that I feel for them."
