All the Covid-19 restrictions being eased next as Dr Tony Holohan shares big update

Restrictions covering three key areas of society are set to be eased from Monday after the Chief Medical Officer gave the government the green light.

Under the roadmap for reopening, public health measures will be relaxed from September 20 amid a positive update from Dr Tony Holohan.

People could be returning to workplaces for the first time in a year and a half from then.

Under the changes taking effect in a few days time, attendance at work "for specific business requirements may commence on a phased and staggered attendance basis".

The other big area which will see restrictions being eased surrounds organised indoor group activities.

Activities such as sports, arts, culture, dance classes can take place indoors with capacity limits of 100 people with appropriate protective measures.

This applies where all patrons are immune, ie fully vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19 within the previous six months.

Kids under the age of 18 who are accompanied can also enjoy these organised indoor group activities.

Where patrons have mixed immunity status, pods of up to six participants will be permitted, excluding adult leaders or teachers.

Multiple pods will be permissible subject to protective measures.

The number of pods will need to take into account the size of the venue and allow for substantial social distance between individual pods.

Meanwhile, a third aspect of Monday's further reopening will mean restrictions on outdoor group activities for participants will be removed.

However, where applicable, spectator attendance will remain in line with regulations for events.

It comes as NPHET said on Thursday that the further easing of restrictions can go ahead as planned from September 20.

Major changes are also expected to be implemented when it comes to children.

Dr Holohan told an Oireachtas health committee meeting earlier this week that around 1,200 children are being identified as close contacts every day.

Currently, a child who is a close contact of a case in a school is absent from the classroom for 10 to 14 days.

It is anticipated that children who are close contacts of a confirmed case of Covid-19 won’t have to stay out of school from the end of this month, under plans being discussed by NPHET.

It’s also understood that NPHET will not recommend the mandatory wearing of face masks for children in primary schools, following advice from the Health Information & Quality Authority (HIQA).
