All the candidates standing at the 2023 local elections in Oldham

More than 200 candidates are competing for residents’ votes in this years’ local elections in Oldham – which sees every seat up for grabs.

Following a review by the Boundary Commission for England, every council seat in the chamber is up for election, with three council roles being contested in each of the borough’s 20 wards. It is the first all-out election to be held in Oldham since 2004.

Currently the town hall is made up of 35 Labour members, nine Conservatives, nine Liberal Democrats, five Failsworth Independent Party members and two independents.

The all-out election will likely prove to be more dramatic than previous years, in which just a third of the council seats went to the ballot box. Crucially, Labour will be aiming not to lose more ground to the Failsworth Independents and Conservatives, which both won seats from the ruling party in the May 2022 election.

The council leader, Amanda Chadderton, will also be fighting to retain her seat in Royton South, following the defeat by her leadership predecessors' Arooj Shah and Sean Fielding at the previous two local elections.

Ms Shah is standing in St Mary’s ward hoping to win back a seat on the council, after being ousted from Chadderton South ward by Tory candidate Robert Barnes last year.

In this year’s election, which is being held on Thursday, May 4, there are 50 candidates standing for the Conservative Party, 57 for Labour, 49 for the Liberal Democrats and 52 for smaller parties or independents.

Voter registration closes on at midnight on Monday, April 17. Under new government legislation, voters must also now show photo ID when voting in person, as you will be turned away without this.

If you do not currently have an accepted form of photo ID such as a passport or driving license, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate before 5pm on April 25. The deadline to register to vote by post is 5pm on Tuesday, April 18 while the deadline to register online for a proxy vote is 5pm on Tuesday, April 25.
