All the big city developments coming to Glasgow in 2022

Glasgow has undergone much change over the last few years and 2022 will be no different.

Between huge transport projects and the redevelopment of some of its most historic areas, the city is set to look very different in the near future.

Glasgow's population has been steadily growing since 2006, and with so many people now living, working, and commuting around the city, the need for better infrastructure has never been more important.

Thankfully there are major developments planned in 2022 in connection with the Glasgow City Region City Deal, with funding provided from the Scottish and UK Governments.

Read on to see some of projects to keep an eye out for next year.

Work has been carried out in the city centre which has seen the expansion of footpaths and cycle lanes as well as the planting of more shrubs (Glasgow City Council)

Despite some delays to developments due to the pandemic, the Avenues projects will continue next year and take roughly 18 months to complete.

Designed to create a more environmentally friendly city, the Glasgow City Region Deal is investing around £115 million on the project which is introducing more trees and a network of pedestrian and cycle priority routes.

So far work has been carried out along Sauchiehall Street, which has seen the expansion of footpaths and cycle lanes as well as the planting of more shrubs.

The continuation of the project, which is divided into five blocks, will see improvement on Argyle Street West, Rose Street, Buchanan Street and Cambridge Street.

Meanwhile the M8 Bridge at Sighthill is expected to open in the early months of 2022. The new cyclist, pedestrian and wheeler bridge was constructed over the summer.

Part of the £250million regeneration of the north of Glasgow, it is the biggest project of its kind in the UK outside of London and will form an active travel route between Sighthill and the city centre.

Finally, a project to build a new bridge between Govan and Partick is set to move forward next year.

Construction firm Farrans (Construction) Ltd received the contract at the start of December and construction will begin in the new year.

The £29.5m scheme will see a new pedestrian/cycle bridge over the River Clyde, connecting Water Row with Pointhouse Quay.
