All secondary school pupils and college students must wear masks including in lessons (WalesOnline/Rob Browne)

PHW has always stressed that Covid cases reported in schools do not mean transmission happened there and that schools reflect rates in the community.

Since all learners in schools and colleges were allowed to return to classrooms for face to face teaching on March 15 they have been following strict guidance to reduce risk of infection.

All those in secondary schools must wear masks at all times inside school , including in lessons. Teachers , including in primary, must wear masks whenever they can't socially distance.

Teenagers aged 14 and over are encouraged to take two rapid result lateral flow Covid tests each week. Contact year group bubbles still operate and there are one way systems and staggered start and end times. Canteens have re-opened.

Since the start of the academic year there have been a total 10,423 reports of Covid-19 cases across 1,267 schools; 4,485 cases in staff and 5, 938 in pupils.

From a total of 1,573 schools across Wales that means just over eight in 10 schools (80.5%) have had at least one case. 210 schools have had only one case.
