All the 1 July furlough changes as millions could be called back to work this week

Changes to the rules around furlough will begin to kick in this week, as millions should prepare to be called back to work.

As many of the 9.1 million people who are currently furloughed could return to work from 1 July as companies will be allowed to take people back part-time from Wednesday.

Employers can bring certain workers back for any number of hours or shift pattern and only pay for the work done.

The three-week rule will also be scrapped, which states that if you are furloughed it has to be for a minimum of three weeks.

The scheme also closes this week, meaning no new people on a business's books can be furloughed.

It comes as the UK Government begins to wind down the job retention scheme, which was set following the coronavirus outbreak in March and has cost billions of pounds.

Furloughed staff will continue to get 80% of their salary throughout August to October.

However, employers will be expected to gradually contribute more towards furloughed employees' salaries before the scheme comes to an end in October.

Scots have already been warned that these changes will also see companies making redundancies.

Expert Andrew Sanford, a business advisory partner, has previously said: "There are some tough business decisions to make.”

"Regrettably, with the additional costs of furloughing staff, and the inevitable restrictions likely to be in place post lockdown, businesses will have to consider whether it is economically viable to continue furloughing all of their staff and many may be made redundant.”
