All Swansea schools will remain shut next week with councils across Wales set to follow

Schools in Swansea are to remain closed to pupils next week - although online learning will be provided.

Swansea Council has confirmed all its schools, which were due to reopen on Wednesday, January 6, will now aim to return to face-to-face learning from Monday, January 11.

However, schools will provide "onsite childcare" for vulnerable children if needed and critical workers’ children if essential from Wednesday, January 6.

The announcement echoes that of Rhondda Cynon Taf made earlier today.

The delayed return it to allow time to consider updated information, expected next week, about Covid-19, including the new variant.

The position will be reviewed on January 6.

Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Andrew Morgan, who is also leader of the Welsh Local Government Association, said he understood most other councils in Wales will also decide not to re-open schools next week.

The change follows a meeting between leaders and education chiefs of all 22 councils with Welsh Government ministers.

It is expected the majority of pupils will now learn online next week with the return to face-to-face learning by January 11 kept under review by councils depending on the situation in individual areas.
