All sport in Republic of Ireland to return from June 29

All sporting activity in the Republic of Ireland has been given green light to resume from June 29.

The Irish Government announced the move on Friday as part of an accelerated Covid-19 exit plan.

All sports will be allowed to return, but any decisions will be up to each sport's governing body.

Barbers and hairdressers have also got the go-ahead to open on June 29.

Horse racing has already returned behind closed doors in Republic, and now other sports look set to return to some action.

A limited number of spectators will be allowed to attend outdoor events, with the number rising from July 20.

The government's initial five-stage plan had signalled that teams would be permitted to begin non-contact training at 'phase three' on 29 June.

But new measures mean full training can resume at the end of the month, with no restrictions on when competitive action can start.

The R-rate of Covid-19 infection in the Republic is currently at 0.7.

Professor Philip Nolan, Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, said on Thursday that it is "heartening to see that none of the data suggests that there is a significant increase of transmission of COVID-19 in the community since the commencement of Phase 2".
