All set to welcome ospreys back to Perthshire

Staff at a Perthshire nature reserve are getting ready to welcome their resident ospreys once again.

Every summer a breeding pair of the birds migrate from West Africa and make the Loch of the Lowes near Dunkeld their home.

They are due to arrive at the end of this month, and those tracking the birds from the Scottish Wildlife Trust say they have been sighted crossing the Strait of Gibraltar.

Once they arrive at the nature reserve, they will be watched 24 hours a day from the reserve hides on the banks of the loch as well as via a webcam.

Last year the male osprey LM12 touched down on March 15, with his female partner LF15 arriving on March 23.

The nature reserve said they are hoping the birds are on safe passage with favourable winds.

In 2019 the pair successfully bred two osprey chicks before returning to West Africa in August.

Once the pair arrive, the visitor centre will be open daily and entry is £4.50, concessions £4, children £1 and free for Scottish Wildlife Trust members.
