All rugby training activity in Rhondda Cynon Taf shut down with immediate effect

All community rugby training in Rhondda Cynon Taf has been shut down with immediate effect.

The Welsh Rugby Union made the announcement on Wednesday evening, hours after it was announced RCT will be placed under local lockdown restrictions from 6pm on Thursday.

It comes after the local authority area's incidence rate hit 82.1 per 100,000 people over the past seven days. That was well in excess of the infection rate of 50 per 100,000 people that marked the threshold which prompted the introduction of Wales' first local lockdown, which came into effect in Caerphilly on September 8.

Health minister Vaughan Gething told a press conference there are two "significant" coronavirus clusters in the area, one of which relates to an unnamed rugby club in lower Rhondda.

The other is in connection with what the minister described as "a club outing" to the Doncaster races, which stopped off at a series of pubs on the way.

Abercynon RFC issued a statement to confirm they had not organised such a trip amid social media rumours, and WalesOnline understands the outing is not linked to a rugby club.

The Abercynon statement read: "Abercynon RFC would like to inform everyone that the club has not organised or run any trips from the club in 2020, including any trips to Doncaster.

"This statement is in response to press/social media speculation. "

Following the Welsh Government restrictions being imposed, the WRU have now released a statement, saying: "All community rugby training in RCT is now suspended with immediate effect until further notice, in line with the measures issued for community rugby in Caerphilly County Borough last week.

"This means there will be no sanctioned Club or Female Hub rugby training activity in the area whilst these special measures are in place.

"Whilst we acknowledge that schools are remaining open, we want to play our part in limiting community transmission at this time, and our priority here is player welfare and public health.

"Our clubs have been patient and resilient to date, and we know that you will want to play your part in helping the local communities get back to normal as quickly as possible.

"We would also remind Clubs and Hubs that travel into and out of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough is not permitted without good reason, and travelling to attend training would not be considered a valid reason.

"We will continue to review these measures on a regular basis and in line with the Welsh Government timelines.

"In relation to the use of rugby clubs for social purposes, this also needs to be managed in accordance with Welsh government guidance and with the required Covid-19 hygiene and Track and Trace protocols in place.."

The professional game is exempt from the changes and therefore Cardiff Blues-linked training operations are unaffected.

It's understood the WRU have not been made aware of any cluster issue related to the training and playing activity protocols put in place at Welsh rugby clubs.

Clubs have been issued with detailed advice and guidelines on a safe and phased return to playing activities, with all players, coaches and parents having to complete an online safety course before attending.
