All ready for the City of Perth Salute

The streets of Perth are once again to be filled with the music of pipe bands at the annual City of Perth Salute.

Inspired by the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the City of Perth Salute returns to Perth for its fourth year on Sunday, August 18.

There will be a parade of international pipe and military bands which leaves from the South Inch at noon.

The bands will be joined by a number of local bands from across Perth and Kinross, and will parade up Tay Street to the North Inch, finishing in the arena at 1pm.

Performances in the arena will then run until 2.15pm

Some of the international marching bands which will feature have come from across the world and are actually guest bands at this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle.

This includes steel bands, jazz bands, mariachi bands, accordion bands and samba, helping to bring a carnival feel to the Perth parade.

Perthshire Brass, the Black Watch ACF Band, Perth and District Pipe Band and the Atholl Highlanders will also be entertaining the crowds on Sunday.

A large contingent of youth bands will be joining in as they are competing in the International Youth Band Festival at Perth Concert Hall.

And locally, there will be representation from the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Cadets, Boys’ Brigade, Scouts and Girl Guides, as well as other local youth organisations such as the Fair City Baton Twirlers.

Once at the arena on the North Inch, residents and visitors can enjoy static displays of vintage military vehicles, a display from Adventure Circus, model steam engines, a display from the British Legion Bikers Association and a show from the 7th Scots Jackals.

This will also be the last City of Perth Salute before Brigadier Sir Melville Jameson retires from the post of lord-lieutenant of Perth and Kinross.

Sir Mel introduced the City of Perth Salute four years ago as part of his role as the queen’s representative in the region. To mark the occasion, he will be given the freedom of the city at the close of the event.

Following his retirement, Stephen Leckie, CEO of Crieff Hydro, takes over the reigns as lord-lieutenant of Perth and Kinross.

The event is free to attend.
