All quiet on the A.J. Green front as other franchise tag dominoes fall

Other teams around the NFL continue to get things done with franchise players ahead of the Wednesday deadline.

While that has been going on, we haven’t heard much on the A.J. Green front with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Instead, an unexpected development happened between the Kansas City Chiefs and star defensive lineman Chris Jones, with the Chiefs locking him down on a four-year extension.

Over in Baltimore, the Ravens at least upped the tag value for Matt Judon to avoid a dispute over whether he should be designated as a linebacker or defensive end.

And somewhat randomly, although no tag was involved, the Cleveland Browns just locked up Myles Garrett on a five-year extension.

Translation: Big things are happening around the league and can happen despite the coronavirus pandemic. But that apparent hiccup which has also prevented the Bengals from signing rookies or a free agent like Trae Waynes has also played a part in nothing happening with Green.

A recent report — which checked in as very expected — said the Bengals still expect Green to sign his tag and play under it in 2020. There’s no deadline for him to sign the tag itself but Green and the Bengals only have until Wednesday afternoon to work out a long-term extension or long-term talks will have to wait until after the season.
