All-out brawl erupts at end of Kansas v Kansas State college basketball match

Derby matches with your local rivals are always known to be tense affairs, but emotions spilled over at the end of a college basketball game in the USA on Tuesday night.

The University of Kansas Jayhawks welcomed the Kansas State Wildcats for what was a crucial encounter in the Big 12 Division of the NCAA .

The Jayhawks cruised to a 81-60 victory at the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas, with Christian Braun leading the way with a 20-point scoring return.

However, tensions boiled over after Jayhawks power forward Silvio De Sousa taunted DaJuan Gordon having blocked a shot from the Wildcats man with the final play of the game.

That sparked the wild incident in Kansas as both benches emptied, leading to shocking scenes that took place in a space reserved for disabled spectators behind one of the hoops.

Players from both teams traded blows with one another, while images of the fight showed De Sousa wielding a metal chair high above his head.

Local police officers and coaches from the two sides had to intervene to break up the fight and took several minutes to do so.

The scenes were likely to have concerned many watching at home, with the game broadcast across America on the ESPN network.

And Jeff Long, the director of athletics at the University of Kansas, said the incident had brought shame upon the institution.

"The conduct of a few of our student-athletes was simply unacceptable and not reflective of who we are," said Long.

"There is no place for this conduct in college athletics or here at KU."

Bizarrely, the teams were then summoned back to the court once tensions had calmed down to play out the remaining one-tenth of a second that was left on the game clock.

However, just five players from both teams returned with the remainder having been ejected by the referee following the brawl.
