All other iPhone cases are dead to me after testing this one with an e-ink display — here’s why

Xtrem iPhone 17 Pro case.

By now, I’ve gone through hundreds or maybe thousands of phone cases in my career. While some have practical applications, like the drop protection you get with Otterbox cases and the extra battery endurance of a Mophie battery case, I’ve come across novel ones too — like selfie cases that let me use the superior rear cameras instead of the traditional selfie one.

However, they’re all obsolete for me because of the innovative feature I found with the Xtrem Inno case for the iPhone 17 Pro. On the surface, it looks like any other generic case I’d find on Amazon, but it ingeniously packages an e-ink display that makes it the most customizable case I’ve ever come across.

After using it for over a week, I can say you won’t ever want to go back to anything else. Here is what makes it so special.

A design just for you

Phone cases shouldn’t be boring, they should be an extension of your personality. That’s what I love most about the Xtrem Inno. At its core, the case is built around offering a way to make the design uniquely mine. There’s a circular cutout on the back that houses a color e-ink display, which I can customize with any design I want.

Since I attended a World Cup game, I thought it’d be great to use an image of Homer Simpson I found online for the occasion. The app makes the process a breeze because I can take literally any image and send it wirelessly to the e-ink display. The transfer takes less than 30 seconds, leaving me with a completely new case design.

Few phone cases offer this level of customization, but it doesn’t end there. The app also includes "remix" options that add different artistic styles to your images, though these require using credits. While it’s a nice addition, you could easily use AI chatbots like Gemini or ChatGPT to give your photos that added creative touch for free before uploading them.

No battery required

Considering there’s a screen built into this case, most people would assume it needs a steady supply of power — but it doesn’t. This is what makes the Xtrem Inno so remarkable. E-ink displays are bistable, meaning the only time they consume power is when the image changes. Once the image is set, it stays there indefinitely without drawing a single microwatt of electricity.

To actually transfer and change the image, the case relies on NFC induction. While the company doesn't explicitly explain the physics on its site, I suspect that the internal NFC antenna built into the case catches radio waves from the phone and converts them into just enough electricity to rearrange the E-ink display. Because it doesn't need an internal battery, the Xtrem Inno manages to remain incredibly slim. It honestly works like magic, and you’ll be just as impressed as I was.

Yes, it supports MagSafe

In 2026, I can’t accept any case that lacks MagSafe support. Initially, I was concerned that the e-ink display would negate this feature. However, those worries disappeared the moment I snapped my MagSafe wallet directly onto the back. It works flawlessly, which is a major win for utility.

Beyond just magnetic accessories, I was equally surprised to find that wireless charging works perfectly through the case. I can slap it onto any of the 3-in-1 MagSafe chargers I use daily to top up my iPhone without any issues. I didn’t think the perfect iPhone case existed, but this comes incredibly close.

Right now, the Xtrem Inno will run you around $70, and it comes in three colors. The only real downside is that compatibility is limited to a select handful of iPhones, with no Android options on the market yet. Given how fantastic this level of personalization is, I hope they expand to more devices soon because this case delivers everything I want.
