All Omni-Tool upgrades in Grounded 2 and how to unlock them

If you’ve just claimed your Omni-Axe in Grounded 2, don’t be fooled: it’s much more than a simple hatchet. It’s actually an Omni-Tool, capable of transforming into a Hammer, Wrench, and Shovel, and with the right upgrades, it only gets stronger.

While it isn’t a soul-crushing experience per se, Grounded 2 won’t hold your hand either. You’ll need to explore, experiment, and occasionally stumble your way into understanding its mechanics. Thankfully, however, the game offers a solid main story questline that guides you through most of the basics, including Omni-Tool upgrades. You’ll find yourself looking for resources to unlock the Omni-Tool’s Shovel and Hammer functions within minutes of entering the park, but there’s more to this handy tool than just its base features.

We’ve listed all of Omni-Tool’s functions and upgrades below.

You get the Axe upgrade for free when you pick up the Omni-Tool from the board at the Ranger Outpost: Snackbar. But the other functions—Hammer, Shovel, and Wrench—must be purchased separately. Once you’ve unlocked them all, you can upgrade each one further using Raw Science and other resources to boost their power.

At the time of writing, all four functions can only be upgraded to level two. While the Omni-Tool’s upgrade page shows possible upgrades up to level five, the required materials remain marked with a question mark even after you reach level two for all the functions. As Grounded 2 is still in early access, upgrades beyond level two (tier three, four, and five) will be made available in future updates.

How to upgrade your Omni-Tool in Grounded 2

In Grounded 2, you can’t upgrade your Omni-Tool on the go or at the Workbench. Instead, you have to go to the Comms Array section of a Ranger Post and interact with the Ranger Station there.

In the Ranger Station menu, choose the Omni-Tool menu, then click on the Upgrade you want to see its requirements. You can also see these requirements from the crafting menu; you just can’t build it without the Ranger station. If you have the required ingredients, just click on the upgrade level and hit Upgrade.

How to use your Omni-Tool in Grounded 2

The Omni-Tool in Grounded 2 is much more flexible than the equipment we usually get as beginners in most survival games. For starters, it’s an all-in-one tool, so you don’t have to carry an axe, shovel, hammer, and wrench all separately in your inventory. If you want to use the Omni-Axe, simply go up to a choppable stalk and start using the tool. If you want to use the Omni-Hammer, go up to a Sap Clump, Acorn, or anything that can be smashed and use the tool. The same applies to the Omni-Shovel and Omni-Wrench functions.

To top it off, the Omni-Tool doesn’t occupy a slot of its own in your inventory or hand either, so you never have to choose between leaving it back or carrying it due to lack of space. That said, it can’t be used as a weapon to kill any creepy crawlies. For that, you need weapons.

When are level three, four, and five Omni-Tool upgrades coming to Grounded 2?

Obsidian Entertainment has released an extended Grounded 2 roadmap for players curious about what’s coming next—and it includes information on new tier three and tier four equipment and upgrades.

According to Obsidian, new tier three equipment and Omni-Tool upgrades will be made available with the Winter update, potentially due anytime between December 2025 and March 2026. New tier four equipment and Omni-Tool upgrades will be available in the Summer 2026 update.

Unfortunately, the developer hasn’t announced a release time frame for tier five Omni-Tool upgrades. The roadmap, however, promises more Omni-Tool upgrades beyond the Summer update in 2026—we just don’t know when.
