All of Edinburgh's Hogmanay headliners from the 1990s to present day

The annual Concert in the Gardens is arguably as much of a centrepiece of Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations as the fireworks.

Big names from around the globe have been rocking the capital's New Year's Eve revellers for almost 30 years.

It was up until 1992 that our Hogmanay festivities took place almost entirely within the surrounds of the Tron Kirk, with the traditional gathering and linking of arms at the bells being described in a contemporary issue of the List as an increasingly "tawdry" affair.

Everything changed in 1993 when crowds assembled for a new and enlarged street party on Edinburgh's main thoroughfare, Princes Street.

That year, a stage was erected at the Mound, and the likes of Horse, The River Detectives, The Silencers, Shirley Manson's pre-Garbage outfit Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, and The Humpff Family were on hand to provide the evening's entertainment.

Down in the Gardens at the Ross Bandstand, where today's main Hogmanay concert is held, the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, Capercaillie, and the cast of Les Miserables provided a more tartan-infused and operatic alternative.

Since those far off days, everyone from Moby and Blondie, to Madness and the Pet Shop Boys have been booked to play the big Hogmanay stage.

And on Tuesday it was revealed that Basement Jaxx are the latest headliners to play under the shadow of the castle rock, as the annual extravaganza makes a welcome return after being cancelled last year due to Covid.
