All new features in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a full remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, rebuilt on the latest version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine. It launches on July 9, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

The remake keeps Edward Kenway’s original pirate story, but Ubisoft has rebuilt the game with new visuals, new story content, reworked combat, improved stealth, upgraded parkour, expanded naval systems, and several quality-of-life changes.

Updated visuals and Anvil engine upgrades

Black Flag Resynced has been rebuilt on the latest evolution of Anvil, the same engine family used for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The remake includes ray-traced lighting, global illumination, reflections, micropolygon rendering, physically based rendering, modernized water simulation, and 60fps options on consoles.

The Caribbean also has a new dynamic weather system. Weather now affects the world more visibly, with moving signs, ship sails reacting to wind, coconuts rolling during storms, breakable objects, and reworked water physics for sailing.

New story content

Black Flag Resynced adds new story arcs, new missions, and new scenes while keeping the original structure. Matt Ryan returns as Edward Kenway, and Ubisoft says the remake includes additional scenes featuring the original cast.

Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet are getting new storylines, and Ubisoft says three new officers join Edward as part of the main narrative.

One of the larger additions is the officer system for the Jackdaw. Players can find and assign new officers to the ship, and each officer brings a special ability to naval combat.

The officers are also supposedly a part of the main narrative, so they are not just passive stat bonuses added to the ship menu. While it’s good that there will not be a major disconnect within systems, let’s hope this enhances the story feel instead of disrupting it.

Reworked combat

Ground combat has been rebuilt with a stronger focus on parries and takedowns, with deliberate and curated encounters. While the old combat system was serviceable to decent, it wasn’t as fleshed out as one would hope. Now, Ubisoft is trying to enhance it with new visceral takedowns, parrying mechanics, and moves that utilize pistols and rope darts.

There’s stronger emphasis on takedowns overall, and Edward can trigger them through Hidden Blade attacks, perfect parries, wall and ground moves, and can even chain them together.

New stealth options

Stealth is supposed to become much more flexible in Black Flag Resynced. Edward can now crouch anywhere on land, use shadows and low light to reduce visibility, and use the expanded Eagle Vision to tag enemies and objectives.

The remake also adds dive-anywhere stealth for approaching seafront locations and ships, which should add variety to sea encounters and make stealth there feel less samey.

Better tailing and eavesdropping missions

Tailing and eavesdropping missions have been changed, eliminating the instant fail states upon losing the target – one of the biggest points of criticism the original game faced on release. Resynced is designed to keep those missions moving instead of stopping the player immediately, but as of now, it’s unknown how these temporary failure states will be handled.

Reworked naval combat

Naval combat has new secondary weapon options and reworked enemy ships. Ubisoft says shrapnel barrels can damage enemy sails, 8-pounders can open more weak points in hulls, and enemy ships now carry different equipment depending on faction and alliance.

The Jackdaw’s weapons now have secondary firing modes that can be swapped while aiming. Ubisoft also confirmed changes such as the Ram Dash becoming available earlier and the new Deadman’s Cohort mortar upgrade, which adds a secondary firing option that saturates an area with Carcass bombs.

Kenway’s Fleet returns without the old app

Kenway’s Fleet returns, but it is now fully integrated into Black Flag Resynced. Captured ships can be added to the fleet and sent on missions to generate passive income, trade goods, and rare activity spawns.

In the original, it was a companion app and online functionality, but in the remake, the system is available through the Captain’s Cabin.

More Jackdaw customization

The Jackdaw has more customization options in the remake, including new ship skins and pets. Players can bring a cat or monkey companion aboard while sailing.

The Captain’s Cabin can be used to change the Jackdaw’s appearance, change Edward’s outfit, switch ship pets, and manage Kenway’s Fleet, while some upgrade and cargo functions have moved to local Harbourmasters.

New sea shanties and photo mode

The original sea shanties are returning, and Ubisoft has added 10 new songs for the crew to sing while sailing. Photo mode is also confirmed for Black Flag Resynced.

Separate difficulty settings

Black Flag Resynced has four separate difficulty settings for combat, naval combat, stealth, and activities. Each has Forgiving, Intended, and Hard options, and players can change them during the game.

Combat difficulty affects enemy behavior and Edward’s damage, stealth difficulty changes detection and enemy search behavior, naval combat difficulty changes Jackdaw and enemy ship damage rules, and activity difficulty affects shipwreck exploration and harpooning.

Does Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced include multiplayer?

No, Black Flag Resynced does not include multiplayer. Ubisoft says the remake is focused on the solo campaign and character-driven experience. The original Black Flag had multiplayer, but the remake is not bringing it back. DLCs are also not being brought back within the main game.
