All new cars to be fitted with anti-speeding devices in UK by 2022

New cars sold in the UK after 2022 will be fitted with anti-speeding devices that will aim to prevent people from breaking the speed limit.

The mandatory technology is part of a roll-out of 30 tough new safety requirements introduced by the EU, The Department for Transport said they will also adopt the regulations despite Brexit.

What will this mean for drivers?

The devices, called The Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) limiters, will monitor road signs and cap your top speed - however this can be overridden by a driver.

The regulations also specify that new cars should have: autonomous emergency braking, which can detect pedestrians and cyclists, and lane departure warnings to stop drivers from drifting.

Meanwhile, lorries will have drowsiness alarms fitted to wake drivers who fall asleep behind the wheel.

Safety v freedom

The move is being hailed "the biggest leap forward since the seat belt" and experts say it could save up to 1300 lives a year and cut fatalities on EU roads by 20 per cent.

The ruling came after months of negotiations between the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission, where concerns were raised over a clash between safety and freedom.

Once the agreement has been given final approval from the European Parliament from member states it will be worked into domestic law of the respective nations.
