All Liverpool playgrounds shut immediately as lockdown continues

All playgrounds in Liverpool are now closed as the council enforces the government's near total lockdown of the UK to limit the spread of coronavirus.

The move comes as people in the city enter their second day living under new rules, which strictly limit people's movements outside their homes.

Under the rules, announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday night, people should not go out unless they are going to shop for necessities, go to essential work or for one form of exercise per day.

In a statement on Twitter, the council said people could continue to use the parks themselves but had to ensure they respected distancing guidelines.

The tweet read: "All play areas and recreational equipment are closed with immediate effect.

"Residents can continue use the city's parks for their once daily exercise, as long as they adhere to the Government's rules on social distancing."

Other council services, such as recycling and waste collection centres, shut yesterday to protect staff and residents.

It comes as cases of coronavirus in Merseyside continue to rise.

Yesterday Liverpool reported its first confirmed death from the disease, while the number of cases rose by six to 41.

Elsewhere, cases in Wirral now stand at 15, in Sefton they stand at 13 and in Knowsley and St Helens they stand at eight each.

The council announced yesterday that funeral services at its three crematoria would be limited to 10 people until further notice to help restrict the spread of coronavirus.
