In their statement, Merseyside Police said: "All roads in Liverpool City Centre closed since the tragic murder of Ava White on Thursday have now been opened. Thanks for your support and understanding as these vital enquiries were carried out."

The death of 12-year-old Ava White caused shock and devastation across Liverpool.

The schoolgirl was out with friends in Liverpool city centre on Thursday when she was assaulted on Church Street shortly after the Christmas lights switch on, at around 8.39pm.

Police believe a "verbal argument" took place which resulted in the young girl suffering "catastrophic injuries."

Officers discovered Ava collapsed on the ground and a member of the public who witnessed the attack was giving first aid.

Ava was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital where she later died despite the best efforts of medical staff.

The Year 8 pupil at Notre Dame Catholic College was described as "unique" and "hugely" popular.

Four boys were arrested on suspicion of murder, including one 13 year old, two 14 year olds and one 15 year old, all from the Dingle area.

The teenagers were believed to have run up School Lane across Hanover Street and on to Fleet Street away from the scene and were later arrested at different locations.

Police later confirmed a knife had been used, but they had no yet retrieved the weapon.

Police set up an extensive cordon in the city centre including Williamson Square, Tarleton Street, Church Street, Church Alley, School Lane, Hanover Street and Fleet Street.

Large areas remained closed while specialist officers carried out extensive searches.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or may even have filmed the incident, or who has information which could help police with their inquiries, is asked to direct message @MerPolCC, message ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook’ or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 with reference 0899 of 25 November.
